Introduction |
These attachments have always been popular with students and deservedly so as they provide the first opportunity to observe the sort of skills that will be needed in the pre-registration house year. Such attachments are to be seen as an apprenticeship to the firm as a whole where the consultant will take an active role in guiding you through your timetable as part of your learning experience. |
We know from student evaluations that these posts are highly regarded and valued. A key factor in that high regard has been the relative freedom the PWE posts have offered, allowing individual students to concentrate on skills they feel they need to develop. We encourage you to spend some time before your attachment thinking about what you personally want to achieve from your PWE posts. |
Preparation for Graduate Practice is a theme running through all the Year 6 courses. There will also be a specific Practical Medicine course, where specific issues relating to FY1 practice will be addressed.
The PWE posts are an important part of that preparation. They offer an opportunity to get involved in the work of your attached firm and see at first hand the day-to-day work of a FY1. They also offer you an opportunity as senior students, working closely with FY1s and other members of the firm, to start to accept more clinical responsibility. However you can only perform certain duties under strict supervision.
You cannot prescribe medicines, or write discharge letters on behalf of the FY1. Only qualified staff can order investigations. |
Assessment |
In addition to the end of firm return by post your consultant superior, an acute case report/presentation must be performed during this attachment. Satisfactory performance is mandatory to allow you to proceed to enter the Final Exams. Inadequate performance will require the student to repeat this assessment. |
