Introduction: Understanding renal medicine underpins all aspects of medicine. You will see patients with severe acute renal failure, chronic kidney disease, transplantation and dialysis and have the opportunity to see kidney disease as a complication of many other conditions. You will emerge with enhanced skills in all other areas of medicine. |

- Be able to give a differential diagnosis for a patient with acute renal failure
- Be able to give a differential diagnosis for a patient with chronic renal failure
- Be aware of how kidney disease presents
- Understand that many systemic diseases are complicated by kidney disease
- Understand how to investigate and manage patients with acute renal failure
- Be aware of staging of chronic kidney disease
- Understand how to investigate and manage patients with chronic kidney disease
- Define and list causes and complications of nephrotic syndrome
- List the complications of renal failure
- Be able to manage the electrolyte and acid-base disorders associated with impaired kidney function
- Be able to assess fluid status and produce an appropriate management plan
- See patients on different dialysis modalities
- See patients with renal transplants
- Be aware of the multidisciplinary needs of patients with kidney disease
- List different immunosuppression drugs and their complications
- Understand how drug dosage is affected by renal function.
