Course aim and philosophy |
The principle aim of our course is to prepare you for medical practice with children and families in a variety of settings both inside and outside hospital and for you to appreciate the network of services which exist to support children and youth in health and illness. |
The learning objectives are: |
- To appreciate the scientific underpinnings of common paediatric presentations.
- To recognise presenting symptoms and signs of common paediatric conditions.
- To adapt history taking and examination skills to infants, children and young people.
- To recognise the normal child and the range of normality, including growth and development.
- To be able to communicate with children of different ages and their carer(s).
- To appreciate the impact of illness on families.
- To construct a reasoned differential diagnosis.
- To outline the principles of management (investigations, care therapeutic interventions including parent /patient education) for common paediatric conditions.
- To recognise the ill child.
- To plan emergency management for the seriously ill child.
- To describe the network of services available for children, including those with long-term illness or disability.
- To outline the principles of disease prevention, health promotion, and safeguarding of children.
- To identify and critically reflect on the ethical and legal issues of individual cases, and incorporate this analysis into your overall management plan.
