Paediatrics course aim, philosophy and learning objectives

 
Course aim and philosophy
The principle aim of our course is to prepare you for medical practice with children and families in a variety of settings both inside and outside hospital and for you to appreciate the network of services which exist to support children and youth in health and illness.

The learning objectives are:

  1. To appreciate the scientific underpinnings of common paediatric presentations.
  2. To recognise presenting symptoms and signs of common paediatric conditions.
  3. To adapt history taking and examination skills to infants, children and young people.
  4. To recognise the normal child and the range of normality, including growth and development.
  5. To be able to communicate with children of different ages and their carer(s).
  6. To appreciate the impact of illness on families.
  7. To construct a reasoned differential diagnosis.
  8. To outline the principles of management (investigations, care therapeutic interventions including parent /patient education) for common paediatric conditions.
  9. To recognise the ill child.
  10. To plan emergency management for the seriously ill child.
  11. To describe the network of services available for children, including those with long-term illness or disability.
  12. To outline the principles of disease prevention, health promotion, and safeguarding of children.
  13. To identify and critically reflect on the ethical and legal issues of individual cases, and incorporate this analysis into your overall management plan.
