  4. Patient safety: describe one situation in which patient safety was ensured or was put at risk

Access the portal and at the dropdown menu for "module title" select the following
For Task 1 select "Yr2-1213-PPD-Task1"
For Task 2 select "Yr2-1213-PPD-Task2"
For Task 3 select "Yr2-1213-PPD-Task3"
For Task 4 select "Yr2-1213-PPD-Task4"

Your work will be processed through Turnitin.

Advice:

  • Your reports MUST be your own work and be about your experiences on this clinical attachment.
  • Please submit each task report separately. Do not collate all four reports into one and submit that for each task - Turnitin highlights such copies as being plagiarised.
  • Do not send your reports by email to the course leader, Dr Muir, as they will be accessed via the portal submissions.
  • If there are any problems submitting via the portal, please resend each task immediately by the same deadline and via email to webmaster.feo with the subject line of your message as 'Yr2 PPD Tasks' and an explanation of the problem that arose.

SESSION 1

SESSION 1:   The Professional Doctor: Duties of a Medical Student (taught session in Autumn term)

In preparation for your Year 2 Clinical attachment, this session takes as its starting point the GMC documents Duties of a Doctor and Medical students: professional behavior and fitness to practise. We shall consider the role of medical students, contrasting these with those of qualified doctors, in the light of these booklets of guidance. What are your rights and responsibilities? What are the boundaries? Where do you go for help and advice? What common problems and issues do medical students encounter and, more importantly, what strategies can you use to help you through your time as medical students?

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this tutorial the student should be able to:

    1. Understand the relevance of the Personal and Professional Development Course in the overall curriculum
    2. Define the characteristics of a professional
    3. Describe and discuss the concept of medical professionalism in terms of attributes identifiable as virtues
    4. Compare and contrast differences in the duties of a medical student and qualified doctor, based on guidance from the Faculty and the GMC’s professional behavior and fitness to practise document
    5. Judge how to behave appropriately as a medical student
    6. Know what to do when medical professional values are put at risk
    7. Know what to do to achieve the objectives of the clinical attachments, taking responsibility for own learning, using resources and showing respect for patients
    8. Apply Belbin descriptors to aspects of team/ group work
