Institute on Aging |
The NIA leads a broad
scientific effort to understand the nature of aging and to extend
the healthy, active years of life. In 1974, Congress granted authority
to form the National Institute on Aging to provide leadership in aging

relevant to aging and older people. Subsequent amendments to this
legislation designated the NIA as the primary federal agency on Alzheimer’s

Defence Union |
The MDU was founded on
the principle 'by doctors, for doctors' and is a mutual, non-profit
making organisation owned by its members - doctors, dentists, nurses
and other healthcare professionals. It is not an insurance company.
Its primary role is to provide members with access to indemnity and
to advice and assistance with ethical and medico-legal problems 24
hours a day. The MDU defends the professional reputations of its members
when their clinical skills are called into question, paying legal
costs in the civil courts, professional tribunals and criminal courts
on their behalf. They can also pay damages to patients who have suffered
because of a medical mishap during their treatment. |
Medical
Research Council |
The MRC aims to improve
health by promoting research into all areas of medical and related
science. It supports medical research in three main ways: through
its research establishments; grants to individual scientists; and
support for post graduate students. |
Medical
Women's Federation |
The MWF works to change
discriminatory attitudes and practices, and aims to achieve real equality
by providing practical, personal help from members who know the hurdles
and have overcome them. Members are offered advice and support in
their careers from experienced women doctors. |
UK
Xenotransplantation Interim Regulatory Authority |
Xenotransplantation is
the transplantation of tissue and organs between different species,
and in particular the transplantation of animal tissue into humans.
The Government is advised on these issues by the United Kingdom Xenotransplantation
Interim Regulatory Authority (UKXIRA). Includes some draft publications. |
