Code of practice for students having patient contact

  • Wear an identity badge at all times. Ensure a neat and tidy dress code and good personal hygiene.
  • Always introduce yourself to patients by name and as a medical student.

  • Always explain to a patient what you are about to do i.e. take a history, examine them, etc.
  • Allow the patient privacy to undress and dress.
    Provide a covering for exposed parts of the body when not being examined.
  • You should be supervised by a qualified doctor or specialist nurse when undertaking invasive or sensitive examinations:

- gynaecological examinations

- rectal examinations

- examinations of female breasts

- examinations of male genital areas
