Where you intend to visit
It is advisable to contact the Embassy or High Commission of the country you are going to for advice on the political situation and safety of travel within the country.
Also, check the Foreign Office website
We will maintain a Travel warnings webpage for special risks.
Students who hold UK passports are advised to register their travel plans with the FCO 'Locate' portal so that FCO can alert citizens to relevant travel concerns as well as to be able to contact you in the event of an emergency.

US background check
http://www.mybackgroundcheck.com/students/
The application is online and costs about $30 for a basic student background check.
In order to apply for the US background check, one must submit a US address (for example the address of the place where you are staying whilst on elective) and a 'Government Issued Number' which may be a passport number or national insurance number.
Payment must be made by faxing your credit card details to the company (any card details entered online will be used to verify your US address, and for most students this won't work out).
If you do not know your address in advance, I would recommend you make sure you leave 2-3 working days clear at the beginning of your stay to ensure you have enough time for this paperwork to be processed before starting the placement. However, access to fax machines, printers etc. is very limited at Cook County so it is strongly recommended applying before getting there.

Travelling on College business = Elective

Details of the College's insurance are available on the Imperial Finance Department web pages where the items and degree of cover provided, are shown. This does NOT provide for malpractice cover nor for failure in an Exam causing your elective to be curtailed or rescheduled.

Visas
(a) Students must investigate which visa is required for their elective enquiring with the hospital at their proposed elective and/or the relevant embassy
(b) Even in the same country requirements can vary e.g. in the USA some institutions require a J1 visa whilst some prefer the students to acquire a tourist visa only. Queensland in Australia has a different visa to the rest of Australia.
(c) Students not born in the UK may/will also have different requirement to those nationals born in the UK

(d)

Students may be asked to acquire a temporary work visa

(e)

In general acquiring visas can be time-consuming and should be arranged in plenty of time before departure date
