When you attend the Occupational Health Service you must provide documentation to support your trip together with a signed copy of the approval form from UMO is required.

The hosting Hospital/Clinic will have sent you a letter/form requesting details of your vaccination history as well as specific investigations so it is important to bring that along. You will be required to complete a form detailing your travel plans (both elective and vacation related) and your vaccination history (travel vaccines and any other vaccines you may have had over the last 10 years), so bring along any information you may have - you may need to contact your GP to fill in the gaps.

All elective medical students with destinations to the tropics should make travel vaccination appointments no more than 3 months in advance of elective travel.  No investigations such as serology, Mantoux tests, MRSA swabs will be done unless paperwork from the hospital requesting it is presented at the OH appointment. Students should not rely on recommendations for travel vaccines given by Infectious Disease specialists. The OH staff use a nationally recognised travel database to assist with risk assessment when recommending travel vaccines. Vaccinations such as Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies are given to students on an individual basis when the risk is considered significant or they are in an endemic area for longer than 3 months, which is in line with college policy. HIV talks are scheduled to coincide with the elective season. Considerable resource is allocated to providing this service. Dr Swann may be on holiday and has a very busy schedule, therefore cannot provide prescriptions for HIV PEP at short notice. Students booked into HIV talks must attend.

Vaccinations
You will be provided with up to date information of recommended vaccines for your destination. All vaccines related to your elective are free (i.e. Yellow fever, Typhoid, Combined Tetanus Polio & Diphtheria, Hep A & Meningitis ACWY).

Rabies
A charge will be made for Rabies vaccination of £23 per dose: 3 doses are required to give one year's protection.

Other vaccinations
We will be happy to administer any additional vaccines for your holiday but this will be at cost.
If you are due a Hepatitis B Booster within 12 months we will administer it.

Your OH file
We are allowed to have a copy your OH file for your future reference as you will be asked to provide documentation regarding your vaccines for job applications in the future. Keep this safe as copies of this information will not be supplied by fax or through the post.
