Professional associations

This section contains information and links to bodies and organisations concerned with practising medicine. Although many of these are primarily concerned with postgraduate medicine they are still useful.

General:

General Medical Council

The GMC licenses doctors to practise medicine in the UK. Their purpose is summed up in the phrase 'protecting patients, guiding doctors'. The law gives the GMC four main functions:

    • keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors

    • fostering good medical practice

    • promoting high standards of medical education

    • dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt

The site gives access to many publications relating to all stages of medical education and training e.g. for PRHOs The New Doctor, for SHOs The Early Years, The Doctor as Teacher and Teamworking.

British Medical Association

This site has many useful links e.g. to the BMJ and Medline and the range of BMA services. There are specialised services for medical students and newly qualified doctors e.g. elective insurance, mortgage, pension and other financial advice.

Royal Society of Medicine

The aims of the RSM are to provide a broad range of educational activities and opportunities for doctors, dentists and veterinary surgeons, including students of these disciplines; and allied health-care professionals.

The RSM also promotes an exchange of information and ideas on the science, practice and organisation of medicine, both within the health professions and with responsible and informed public opinion.
